Is Filmora Auto Caption Free? Credits, Limits & Fixes

Quick answer: “Free” is only partly true. You can try captions with the starter credits and edit them for free, but generating captions at volume costs credits (4 credits per minute) and free exports carry a watermark.

Short answer: Filmora’s auto captions aren’t unlimited and free. Wondershare says generating captions uses AI credits, and the Speech-to-Text rate is 4 credits per minute. It also says a starter credit pack comes free when you install Filmora, and that editing captions after they’re generated doesn’t cost credits. This guide explains how the credits work, which plans include them, what you can still do for free, and how to fix common caption problems.

How I reviewed this: this guide is based on Wondershare's official Filmora documentation, its AI credit rules and its pricing page, all checked on 25 October 2026. I haven't tested Filmora’s captions myself yet, so there are no timings, accuracy scores or my own screenshots here. Plans, credits and prices change often, and sometimes daily during sales, so confirm them on Wondershare’s site before you pay. A commission never changes our verdict. See our affiliate disclosure.

Is Filmora auto caption free? The detailed answer

Here’s what Wondershare’s own pages say:

  • Generating captions costs credits. The AI credit rules list Speech-to-Text at 4 credits per minute. The pricing page lists Speech-to-Text as “Paid by AI Credits”.
  • There’s a starter pack. The auto caption page says “a starter pack is included free when you install Filmora”. It doesn’t give the size, so I won’t guess.
  • Editing doesn’t cost credits. The same page says that once captions are generated, editing them (text changes, templates, animations and so on) is free and unlimited.
  • Free exports have a watermark. The pricing page FAQ says the free version gives you the basic editing features and lets you export, but “watermarks will be added to the exported files”.

So you can try auto captions free with the starter credits. But a free user who exports gets a watermark, and once the starter credits run out, generating more captions means getting more credits.

Credit costs for caption features

From Wondershare’s AI credit rules, checked 25 October 2026:

FeatureCredits
Speech-to-Text (auto captions)4 credits per minute
AI Translation, text only5 credits per minute
AI Translation, voice and text16 credits per minute
Text-to-Speech1 credit per 10 characters

The page doesn’t list a separate rate for Dynamic (animated) Captions, and it doesn’t say how partial minutes are rounded. Treat all estimates as approximate.

Which plans include AI credits (pricing page, 25 October 2026)

This is what Wondershare’s individual pricing page showed when I checked it on 25 October 2026:

  • Advanced (subscription, marked “Most Popular”): 1,000 Filmora AI Credits/mo, “used for 20+ AI features”.
  • Perpetual (one-time payment): 1,000 Filmora AI credits (one-time), with updates only within Filmora 16. The page also showed a “Limited Time: +1500 Bonus AI Credits” promotion.
  • Basic (subscription): the plan card I saw listed no AI credit allowance. It listed features such as watermark-free export, 4K export and 1 GB cloud storage.
  • Free: exports carry a watermark (pricing FAQ). The starter credit pack is described on the auto caption page.

About prices: the pricing page uses countdown timers, discounts and changing promotions, and the price text I could read didn’t show the final amounts clearly. Rather than risk printing a wrong number, I’m not quoting prices here. Check the current Filmora prices on Wondershare’s site, and see our Filmora Free vs Monthly vs Annual comparison.

How subscription credits refresh

The pricing page FAQ explains:

  • On a subscription, AI credits are issued every 30 days, starting from the purchase date.
  • Unused credits are reclaimed when the new credits are issued, so they don’t roll over.
  • Credits are shared across Windows and Mac under the same Wondershare account.
  • If you have more than one plan, the credits are combined in your account.

Because unused credits disappear, plan your captioning around your monthly cycle. If you have spare credits near the end of the period, use them on projects you’ll need soon.

Credit budgeting: how far 1,000 credits goes

Using Wondershare’s per-minute rates, here’s what 1,000 credits (the Advanced monthly allowance shown on 25 October 2026) works out to if spent on just one feature:

  • Speech-to-Text only: 1,000 ÷ 4 = about 250 minutes of captions
  • Text-only translation: 1,000 ÷ 5 = about 200 minutes
  • Voice and text translation: 1,000 ÷ 16 = about 62 minutes

Real-world examples:

  • Eight 10-minute YouTube videos a month with captions: about 320 credits
  • Thirty 1-minute Shorts with captions: about 120 credits
  • Four 10-minute videos captioned and translated into one language (text only): about 4 × (40 + 50) = 360 credits

Other AI features (image, music, video generation and so on) use the same credit balance, often at much higher rates. Check the full table if you use them.

Ways to caption with fewer credits

  • Lock your edit before captioning. Generating captions again after a re-cut costs credits again.
  • Caption only the parts with speech. Trim long silences or music-only sections first. This assumes credits are charged by length, which the per-minute rates suggest.
  • Re-use SRT files. Importing captions you already have doesn’t involve speech recognition. See our Filmora SRT guide.
  • Edit instead of regenerating. Wondershare says editing captions doesn’t cost credits, so fix mistakes by hand.
  • Choose text-only translation unless you really need an AI voice. See our translation guide.
  • Cut Shorts from one captioned master. Generate captions once on the long video, then reuse those sections. This is a workflow idea, so check that it suits your edit.

Free alternatives inside the workflow

If you don’t want to spend credits, you can type your own subtitles or import an SRT from another source. Wondershare’s subtitle guide describes importing an SRT, dragging it to the timeline and editing it there. Platforms like YouTube also generate their own captions, outside Filmora. The trade-off is time. Remember too that free Filmora exports carry a watermark, whichever way you make the captions.

Checklist before you pay

  • Work out how many minutes you caption each month, and multiply by 4 for the credits you’ll need
  • Add translation minutes (5 or 16 credits each) if you plan to subtitle in other languages
  • Count any other AI features you’ll use, because they share the same balance
  • Remember that subscription credits reset every 30 days and don’t roll over
  • Check whether a promotion is running. On 25 October 2026 the Perpetual plan showed a +1500 bonus credit offer.
  • Decide between a subscription (monthly credits, ongoing updates) and Perpetual (one-time credits, Filmora 16 updates only)
  • Use up your starter credits first to see whether the caption quality suits your voice and audio

Troubleshooting: caption generation fails or shows an error

People search for things like “Filmora auto caption unknown error”. I couldn’t find an official Wondershare page that explains that specific message, so these are only the checks Wondershare documents:

  1. Internet connection. Wondershare’s Speech-to-Text support page says “cloud processing requires stable internet connection”.
  2. Credit balance. The same page notes that processing uses AI credits. Check your balance in your account.
  3. Audio clarity. Clear speech gives better results, and Wondershare notes that accented speech may need manual fixes.
  4. Sign-in. Credits are tied to your Wondershare account (pricing FAQ). Make sure you’re signed in to the account that has them.
  5. Update Filmora. This is general advice, and menu paths differ between versions.

If it still fails, contact Wondershare support with your version number and the exact error text.

Troubleshooting: subtitles not showing

  • Imported SRT but nothing appears? Wondershare’s guide says to drag the SRT from the media panel onto the timeline. Importing alone doesn’t place it.
  • Captions are on the timeline but not under the playhead? Check the track lines up with the part you’re previewing.
  • Styling missing after export to YouTube? SRT files only hold text and timing. Burn the captions into the video to keep your style (see our Dynamic Captions guide).
  • Watermark on the export? That comes from the free version, according to the pricing FAQ. It isn’t a caption problem.

When does upgrading make sense?

My view, based on the documented credit rates: if you caption only a few short videos, the starter credits plus manual edits may be enough to judge the feature. If you publish captioned videos every week, the per-minute costs add up quickly (see the budgeting section), and a plan with monthly credits starts to make sense. You’ll also need a paid plan to drop the watermark. Compare the current offers on Wondershare’s site, and read our Filmora review to see whether the rest of the editor suits you.

Quick decision guide

Occasional captioner (a few short clips a month): use the starter credits, fix the text by hand, and see whether the watermark matters for your use. Weekly YouTuber: estimate your monthly minutes with the 4-credits-per-minute rate. A plan with monthly credits and watermark-free export is likely the practical choice. Multilingual channel: include translation minutes in your budget, because they cost more than captions.

Steps: Filmora AI Captions

  1. Open your project and select the clip — put the main talking track on the timeline and select the range to caption. Loud music under dialogue is fine to keep, but know it can hurt accuracy.
  2. Open AI / Dynamic Captions — look under Tools or the AI feature panel (wording may show as AI Captions, Auto Captions, or Dynamic Captions depending on version). Confirm language and start generation.
  3. Wait for the pass — processing time depends on clip length, your computer, and Wondershare’s servers. Short clips usually finish much faster than long YouTube cuts.
  4. Proofread like a human — fix names, brands, numbers, URLs, homophones (“your” vs “you’re”), and false starts. Budget roughly 2–5 minutes for a Short; 8–15 for a 10-minute video.
  5. Style for YouTube mobile — high-contrast text (white with dark outline / shadow), short lines (~32–42 characters), don’t cover faces or key demo UI. Use Active Words / Key Words highlight modes if your version offers them — sparingly on long-form.
  6. Timing cleanup — split / merge blocks; early is better than late for scrollers.
  7. Export — burn-in captions for Shorts and many long-form hooks, or export / upload an SRT when your Filmora version supports soft subs.

Compare Filmora plans on the official Wondershare shop (check live pricing). Or Download Filmora free for Windows or Mac — free exports typically carry a watermark.

Proof checklist unique to captions work

  • Names, brands, and URLs spelled the way you want them on screen
  • Numbers and prices correct (AI often guesses)
  • Homophones fixed
  • False starts and filler removed or shortened so lines stay scannable
  • Caption blocks not covering faces or critical demo UI

Burn-in vs soft subtitles

Burned-in captions guarantee mobile viewers see text even when platform UI hides soft subs. Soft subtitles (SRT / YouTube captions) are better for accessibility controls and translation tracks. Many creators do both for flagship videos: burn a tasteful lower-third style for the hook, then upload a full SRT for the rest.

If your Filmora version exports SRT, keep a clean proofread file in the project folder. Future translations and repurposing get cheaper when the master caption file already exists.

Accessibility notes (practical, not legal advice)

High contrast, readable duration, and accurate wording help more viewers. Avoid flashing caption styles that are hard to read. If you serve audiences who rely on captions, budget extra proofreading time — “AI first draft” is not the same as an accessibility-ready transcript.

Honest take

“Free” is only partly true. You can try captions with the starter credits and edit them for free, but generating captions at volume costs credits, and free exports carry a watermark. The good news is that the rates are published and fairly cheap for captions (4 credits per minute), so you can work out your monthly needs before you buy. Just remember that subscription credits don’t roll over.

Check current Filmora plans on the official Wondershare site. Prices and promotions change often.
