Piktochart Review 2026: We Tested the Free Plan (Hands-On)
Piktochart's free plan is a genuinely pleasant editor for infographics, but it only gives each workspace 2 downloads, ever. Use it to try the tool, not to run your content calendar.

That never changes the verdict. How we tested: the ToolPilot team tested Piktochart hands-on on October 31, 2026, on the free plan only. Our test workspace had already used its 2 free downloads, so we could not download a finished file. We did not test any paid plan (Pro, Business, Education or Nonprofit); anything we say about paid features comes from Piktochart's official pricing page, checked on October 31, 2026. Prices change, so confirm on the official site before you buy.
Easy, click-light editor and a fast, useful AI generator. The free plan's 2 lifetime downloads and PNG-only export are the real limits.
- Best for: people who make infographics, reports and one-page explainers regularly
- Watch out for: 2 non-renewable free downloads, slow editor loading, premium templates and icons
- Paid plans from: Pro $10/member/month billed annually ($120/year) or $15 billed monthly, per Piktochart's pricing page on Oct 31, 2026
Piktochart has been around for years as one of the best-known infographic makers on the web. In 2026 it also pitches itself as an AI design tool: type a topic, and Pikto AI builds an infographic, report or presentation for you. That sounds great, but the question most readers ask us is simpler: how far can you actually get on the free plan, and when do you hit the paywall?
So instead of summarising the feature list, we opened a free account and used it. We edited a real template, generated an AI infographic, opened a presentation template, and went looking for every upgrade badge we could find. This review reports exactly what we saw, including the parts we couldn't test. If you're deciding between this and Canva, read our Piktochart vs Canva 2026 comparison after this.
What We Tested (and What We Didn't)
Being clear about the scope matters, because a lot of reviews blur "we read about it" and "we used it". Here is our test in plain terms:
- Plan: Free. No paid trial, no paid plan.
- Date: October 31, 2026.
- Account state: the workspace's 2 free downloads had already been used before this session, so every download attempt hit the limit.
- Tasks: sign in, edit a free infographic template, generate an infographic with Pikto AI, open a presentation template, and check which features are locked.
- Not tested: paid plans, actual file downloads, watermarks or logos on exports, collaboration with other members, publishing or embedding, and the Recording Studio.
Because no file was downloaded during our session, we can't tell you from our own test whether a free-plan PNG carries a Piktochart logo. Piktochart's pricing table lists "No Piktochart Logo on Downloads" as a plan feature, so check that row on the pricing page if it matters to you.
Signing Up and the Dashboard
We signed in with a Google account. Piktochart then asked for a one-time code sent by email before letting us in, a small extra step that's worth knowing about if you're signing in from a shared or new device. Once inside, the dashboard is clean: your visuals, templates, and the AI generator are easy to find. An Upgrade button sits on the dashboard at all times, which is your first hint that the free plan is a trial-sized tier rather than a full workspace.
We did not see any storage quota text in the interface during our session. Piktochart's pricing page lists 1 GB of workspace storage on the Free plan, but we didn't upload enough to get near it.
Test 1: Editing a Free Infographic Template
We started with a free template called "Food Safety Starts With You", a typical portrait infographic with a heading, icon rows and text blocks. Our goal was to make the kind of changes a blogger or small business would really make:
- Change the heading text.
- Swap the main background colour from teal (#5FDAE1) to orange (#F5A623).
- Add a free icon.
- Add a pie chart (we used sample data).

The good: every one of those actions was easy, usually one or two clicks. Click the heading and type. Click the background and pick a colour or paste a hex code. Search icons and click one to add it. Insert a chart and it appears with sample data you can edit. All four edits together took us about 2–3 minutes. For someone who has never used a design tool, that's a short learning curve.
The not-so-good: the editor itself was slow. It took 40–60 seconds to load, and several times the page sat blank for 5–15 seconds before content appeared. That isn't a deal-breaker, but if you're used to snappier tools it will feel sluggish. Also, the pie chart landed on top of existing text, so we had to drag it into a clear space. Not hard, but the tool doesn't place new elements intelligently.
Our takeaway: the editing experience is friendly and simple once it loads. Expect to wait a bit, and expect to nudge new elements into position.
Test 2: Pikto AI Infographic Generator
Next we tried the feature Piktochart pushes hardest. We picked the List layout in portrait and gave it the topic "Benefits of AI video editing for small creators".

- Speed: the infographic was ready in about 50–60 seconds.
- Cost: 1 AI credit. Our balance went from 60 to 59.
- Structure: the sections were coherent and on-topic. It read like a proper list infographic, not random filler.
- Quality of text: generic. It's a decent first draft, but you'll want to rewrite it with your own specifics, numbers and voice.
- Images: stock images, not custom illustrations.
- Variations: Piktochart offered 12+ design alternatives for the same content, which is handy for finding a look you like quickly.
- Disclaimer: the tool shows "PiktochartAI content may be inaccurate". Take that seriously and fact-check before publishing.
We also noticed that the AI image generator showed a cost of 25 credits. On a free plan with 60 credits, that's only two images, so the infographic generator (1 credit) is the far better use of your free allowance.
Verdict on Pikto AI: it's a useful time-saver for getting a structured layout on screen. It won't write expert content for you, and you shouldn't treat its text as fact-checked.

Start with Piktochart's free planTest 3: A Presentation Template
Piktochart isn't only infographics. We opened a Roadmap Technology presentation template in 16:9. It loaded in about 25 seconds and used the same editor as the infographic, so everything we learned in Test 1 carried over: the same click-to-edit text, colour pickers and element panels. That consistency is a plus. You learn the tool once and use it for infographics, reports and slides.
The catch is export. When we checked the download options, PDF and PowerPoint were tagged BUSINESS. On the free plan you can design a presentation, but you can't download it as a PPT or PDF.

The Download Limit: The Free Plan's Biggest Catch
This is the single most important finding of our test. Hovering over the download count, Piktochart says:
"Each Workspace starts with 2 free downloads (non-renewable). This count includes purchased downloads."

Non-renewable is the key word. It's not 2 per month. It's 2 for the life of the workspace. Our test workspace had already used both, so when we tried to download the edited infographic, Piktochart showed a wall reading "You have run out of free downloads", promoting "Unlimited PNG downloads" with a "Choose your plan" button.

Only PNG is available on the free plan. Piktochart's pricing page confirms this: Free gets 2 downloads in PNG; Pro gets unlimited PNG; Business, Education and Nonprofit get unlimited PNG, PDF and PowerPoint.
In practice, this means you should treat your two free downloads as precious. Finish and proofread your design before you download, because you won't get a third attempt without paying.
Every Upgrade Wall We Found
Beyond downloads, here's what was locked behind badges during our free-plan session:
- PREMIUM templates mixed in with the free ones in the template library.
- UPGRADE icons: some icons in the library carry an upgrade badge.
- "Create Brand Colors UPGRADE": you can't save a brand palette on free.
- Transparent background downloads marked UPGRADE.
- PDF and PowerPoint export tagged BUSINESS.
- Brand Assets locked, with an "Unlock Brand Assets" prompt.
None of these stop you from making a nice infographic on free. Many templates and icons are still available. But they show where Piktochart draws the line: free is for trying, branding and professional export are paid.
Piktochart Pricing 2026 (Verified October 31, 2026)
We did not buy or test a paid plan. The figures below come from Piktochart's official pricing page, checked on October 31, 2026. Prices are in US dollars, per member, and may vary by region or change at any time, so check current pricing before you buy.
| Plan | Price (per member) | Downloads & formats | AI credits / storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 (1–4 members) | 2 downloads, PNG | 60 / 1 GB |
| Pro | $120/year ($10/month) billed annually, or $15 billed monthly | Unlimited, PNG | 500 / 100 GB |
| Business | $204/year ($17/month) billed annually, or $20 billed monthly | Unlimited, PNG, PDF, PowerPoint | 1,000 / 250 GB |
| Education | $39.99/year (educational email required) | Unlimited, PNG, PDF, PowerPoint | 250 / 100 GB |
| Nonprofit | $60/year | Unlimited, PNG, PDF, PowerPoint | 250 / 100 GB |
| Enterprise / Campus | Contact sales / custom pricing | As Business / Education, plus more | — |
Piktochart's FAQ says annual billing saves "up to 33%" and that refunds are generally not provided, with case-by-case review via support. One thing to notice: Pro still exports PNG only. If you need PDF or PowerPoint, the cheapest general plan that includes them is Business (or Education/Nonprofit if you qualify).
Pros and Cons From Our Test
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Edits are easy: 1–2 clicks for text, colour, icons and charts | Only 2 free downloads per workspace, and they never renew |
| Our four template edits took about 2–3 minutes | Editor took 40–60 s to load; blank screens of 5–15 s |
| Pikto AI built a coherent infographic in ~1 minute for 1 credit | AI text is generic and flagged "may be inaccurate" |
| 12+ design alternatives for each AI result | AI image generation costs 25 credits, so free covers very few |
| Same editor for infographics and presentations | PDF and PowerPoint export need Business |
| Usable free templates and icons | Premium templates/icons, brand colours, brand assets and transparent backgrounds are locked |
| Paid Pro is relatively affordable at $10/month billed annually | New elements (our chart) can land over existing content |
Who Piktochart Is For
A good fit if you…
- Make infographics and explainers regularly: bloggers, content marketers, HR and internal comms teams, and trainers who turn information into one-page visuals.
- Aren't a designer: the click-to-edit workflow is beginner-friendly.
- Want an AI head start: Pikto AI gets a structured draft on screen quickly, which you then edit.
- Teach or study, or work at a nonprofit: the Education and Nonprofit plans include PDF and PowerPoint export at a much lower listed price.
Probably not for you if you…
- Need lots of free downloads: 2 lifetime downloads won't sustain any regular publishing.
- Mainly need presentations as PPT/PDF but don't want to pay for Business.
- Want an all-in-one tool for social posts, video and scheduling. See our Piktochart vs Canva comparison for that trade-off.
- Have a slow connection or low patience: the editor's load times were the most noticeable friction in our test.
Tips to Get the Most From the Free Plan
- Don't waste downloads. Proofread and finalise before you download. You get two, ever.
- Spend AI credits on infographics, not images. One infographic cost 1 credit; one AI image showed a 25-credit cost.
- Rewrite the AI text. Use the layout, replace the generic copy with your own facts.
- Filter for free assets. Look for the PREMIUM and UPGRADE badges before you build a design around a locked template or icon.
- Be patient on first load. Give the editor up to a minute before you refresh.
- Check new elements' placement. Charts and icons may drop on top of text, so drag them clear.
Our Verdict
Piktochart is a good, approachable infographic tool. In our hands-on test, every edit was simple, and Pikto AI produced a sensible, on-topic infographic in about a minute for a single credit. If your work revolves around infographics and reports, it's worth a look.
The free plan is best seen as an extended demo. Two non-renewable PNG downloads, locked branding, and Business-only PDF/PowerPoint export mean anyone who publishes regularly will need to pay. Based on the official pricing page (October 31, 2026), Pro at $10/month billed annually unlocks unlimited PNG downloads and 500 AI credits; you'll need Business for PDF and PowerPoint. We haven't tested those paid plans, so weigh our verdict on them accordingly.
Our advice: open a free account, edit a template, try one AI infographic, and use your two downloads wisely. If the editor suits your workflow, upgrading makes sense.
Ready to try it? Start free, then upgrade only if you need more downloads.
